Reaching decisions together?
Mediation has the potential to achieve a settlement, on terms agreeable to both, often with imaginative solutions. Mediation is cost effective and avoids the stress of lengthy and expensive court disputes. Importantly it enables people to make decisions together at their own pace and to remain on good terms.
What happens at mediation?
Once you have made the decision to go ahead there will be a series of meetings with you both and your mediator. Your mediator does not work for one or other of you but is
impartial.
Once you reach a decision together then your mediator will draw up the details of your
agreement.
Costs
Sessions normally last one and a half hours. You will always be given an estimate in advance. You both decide how to pay the costs. If you are on a low income mediation may be free for you.
The National Audit Office (which scrutinises public spending on behalf of Parliament) in its March 2007 report concluded that "family disputes that are resolved through mediation are cheaper, quicker and, according to academic research, less acrimonious than those that have settled through the Courts".
